Understanding CSA Points: FAQ

We are all familiar with CSA or Compliance, Safety and Accountability which is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve truck safety with the intent of reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on the nation’s highways.

Often, drivers are unsure how this initiative impacts them individually. Today, we will clear up some common misconceptions and most frequently asked questions about CSA Compliance:

How is my CSA score calculated?

The CSA initiative is built on a set of program core metrics. These are the BASIC (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories) scores. Currently, there are seven safety behaviors ranging from Hours-of-Service Compliance to various serious violations that are recorded and ranked nationally. Your CSA score is your BASIC percentiles compared to industry averages.

Do violations in my personal vehicle appear on this record?

No. A roadside inspection must accompany a traffic stop of a commercial motor vehicle for it to appear on a driver’s CSA record.

How long will this information be on my record?

Data remains on the company record for 24 months and on the CDL holder’s record for 36 months (crash records will be on file for 60 months).

Does a violation count even if the driver was not placed out of service or given a warning or citation?

Yes. Regardless of the action that follows the discovery of a violation or warning, anything listed on a roadside inspection will be used in the CSA measurement system.

Is there an appeals process if I don’t agree with something?

Yes. There is a DataQ system operated by the FMCSA that is an appeals process.  Evidence such as regulatory or factual proof needs to be supplied supporting the position that the violation was incorrect, a statement indicating that you feel it was unfair is not sufficient.

How can I find out what my personal score is?

You can access your CSA score if you register for a PIN using your USDOT or MC number. Keep in mind that your composite CSA score is not public information. Individual BASIC scores are a matter of public information and accessible with a basic DOT number search at

What are the worst violations that have the highest point value for not following the rules of the road during the first six months?

  • Operating a CMV while texting - 30 points

  • Reckless driving - 30 points

  • Speeding 15 MPH over - 30 points

  • Driving after declared out of service - 30 points
