It's National Read a Road Map Day on April 5th!
Even in our current age of technology, it is important to understand how, and when, to read a map. Ah, but the invention of GPS is a such wonderful thing! I frequently hear drivers in orientation say they aren't sure if they could figure out how to get to their destination if they missed a turn. It puzzles me how drivers have become so reliant on their GPS. I am going to date myself here, but I remember back in the day when all you had was an atlas and the directions you were given. Below are just a few reasons why it is so important to know how to read a map.
- In the event your GPS malfunctions, has no signal, or is inaccurate.
- Verification of the route you are about to take is legitimate for the size and weight of your vehicle.
- Verifying possible low clearances such as bridges.
- Figuring out how to get around a road closure due to an accident or road construction.
As you can see, there are still reasons why reading an atlas is so important. If you haven't done so already, just take a few moments to familiarize yourself with your atlas. Open it up and read it — this is an important tool for all drivers.
