Understanding CSA and PSP Scores: How Routine DOT Inspections Impact Your Record
Don Hummer Trucking’s CSA score and your individual PSP score is directly linked to the results of your routine DOT inspections. Whether they occur at weight stations or roadside, inspections can lead to violations or warnings. Don’t be fooled – violations and warnings are interchangeable terms for this purpose. Each carries the same point value and has the same impact on both your PSP score and the motor carrier’s CSA score. There are nearly 1,000 specific CSA violations which are divided into 7 categories referred to as BASICS (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories).
There are “expensive” or weighty violations; such as texting while driving, reckless driving, and speeding in a construction zone. These serious infractions are hefty, 10-point violations that carry a 3-times multiplier for the first 12 months (30 points) and a 2-times multiplier for the next 12 months (20 points) with the last 12 months being the original 10-point value. Thankfully, these don’t happen frequently but when they pop up, they will drastically deteriorate your record.
The most common CSA violations are:
- Defects in lights, tires, and brakes.
- Moving violations such as speeding, lane violations, or following too close
Avoid the urge to become complacent which can result in your individual PSP score creeping higher. A lower score rating is better in the CSA world. Commit to conducting thorough pre-trips every time and practicing safe driving behaviors.
