Uncovering the Causes of Fatigue and Illness Among Truck Drivers

Trucking is one of the most vital professions in our economy, ensuring the smooth delivery of goods and maintaining efficient supply chains. However, the demands of this job bring potential challenges of fatigue and illness.

The lifestyle associated with truck driving can lead to poor dietary habits, limited physical activity, and increased stress. These factors can contribute to several chronic health problems:

  1. Obesity: The sedentary nature of truck driving, combined with limited access to healthy food options, can contribute to weight gain. Obesity heightens the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and joint pain, impairing a driver’s ability to operate safely.
  2. Sleep Apnea: This condition, common among truck drivers, disrupts sleep by causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start. Resulting fatigue makes it difficult for drivers to stay alert.
  3. Mental Health Issues: The isolation of truck driving can lead to mental health challenges such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression.
  4. Musculoskeletal Problems: Hours of sitting and the constant vibration of the truck can cause chronic back, neck, and joint pain, which contributes to fatigue and decreases mobility.

What tips do you use to combat these risks?  We will investigate some effective options in the next blog.
